Interview with Samantha Mousser
1. Please tell us something about your background and your art journey so far.
I’ve been creating art in various forms for as long as I can remember, but my journey truly took shape in 2015 when I sold my first art piece and then in 2018 when I started live painting at events. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to connect with incredible communities like the Psychedelic Lions Den Collective, where I now serve as Co-Art Director. I’ve also been fortunate to serve a connector for artists through curation with a local Long Beach California music collective- Secret Service LBC. Sharing my creativity to lift others up is my mission. My work blends extraterrestrial elements and the exploration of freedom in space, a theme that reflects both my inner journey and my curiosity about the universe.
2. Describe what a normal day looks like as an artist.
My days vary depending on what project I’m working on, but there’s always a balance of structure, flow and a little bit of controlled chaos. I start my mornings early with a workout and journaling to set the tone for creativity. I believe a daily practice whether that be painting, doodling, listening to music or a creative podcast is very important.
3. Can you tell us more about the theme in your art and your inspiration?
My art is deeply inspired by the cosmos and the freedom of exploration. I’ve always been fascinated by astronauts and the symbolism of venturing into the unknown. Themes of love, creativity, and individuality shine through my work, often through characters like NOVA, who represents my artistic evolution. I draw inspiration from nature, music, and the connections I make with people who see their own stories reflected in my pieces.
4. How does your art life impact other parts of your life?
Art brings a sense of purpose and freedom that spills over into every part of my life. It teaches me patience and helps me process emotions in a healthy way. It’s also given me a supportive community and opportunities I never imagined, like live painting at events, collaborating with other artists and curating. At the same time, balancing art with other responsibilities can be challenging, but it’s a constant lesson in prioritization and self-expression.
5. Could you share any difficulties and hardships you had to face in life and how or if you managed/overcame them?
Balancing creativity with the practical side of life has been one of my biggest challenges. There have been times when I doubted my work or struggled with imposter syndrome, especially when comparing myself to other artists. I’ve learned to overcome these moments by focusing on my own growth and embracing the imperfections in my journey. Surrounding myself with a supportive community and taking breaks when needed has also helped me keep going.
6. Tell us about your best experience in the art world so far.
One of my best experiences as an artist this past year has been meeting so many incredible people and forming new connections within the creative community. These interactions have inspired and challenged me, pushing my work to new heights. This year, I finally created a cohesive body of work that I am truly proud of—pieces that reflect my vision and growth as an artist. Sharing these works with others and hearing how they resonate has been deeply fulfilling. It’s been a year of not only creating but also building relationships that remind me of the powerful connection’s art can foster.
7. What practical advice can you give to fellow artists?
Stay consistent and trust your process. It’s easy to get caught up in perfectionism or to compare yourself to others, but the most important thing is to keep creating. Find a community that uplifts you, invest in tools and resources that enhance your work, and remember to take breaks to recharge. Your journey is unique—embrace it.
8. Is the artist life lonely? Please share your thoughts and experiences.
It can be, especially during long stretches of solo work. But for me, it has also been a space for deep reflection and creativity. I’ve learned to balance solitude with community by staying connected with other artists and sharing my work at events. The key is finding the right rhythm between introspection and collaboration.
9. What are you working on at the moment and are there any upcoming events you would like to talk about?
At the moment, I’m pouring my energy into the NOVA Anthology, a project that explores the evolution of my original character, NOVA, through a series of artworks and short stories. NOVA embodies themes of freedom, love, and creativity, and this anthology is a way to bring her journey to life in a more immersive and personal way. It’s been an exciting challenge to expand my storytelling through both writing and art.
